Springwatch presenter and beekeeper Kate Humble discovers the fate of her own bee colony as she looks inside her hive for the first time since the harsh winter of 2009/2010.
Kate is one of many people in the UK who now keeps bees to help combat their fall in numbers.
Honeybees have decreased by 50% in the last 20 years and many species of bumblebees and solitary bees are also in decline.
Changes in land use, wet summers, pesticides and the parasitic Varroa mite are all attributed to the reduction in the bee population.
To help raise awareness of this problem BBC Local Radio is working in partnership with the National Trust on Bee Part Of It, a project to help keep the UK's bees buzzing.
