Jersey overseas aid budget kept
Overseas Aid
Around 1,500 islanders have been on overseas aid trips

Over the last 40 years, around 1,500 islanders have gone on overseas aid trips and raised millions of pounds.

Volunteer projects have been to Africa, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe with millions of pounds going to help victims of disaster.

Jean le Maistre has been involved in the aid projects for many years.

He says the experience is as much life-changing for the people who need aid, as it is for the volunteers who go to help.

Mr le Maistre told BBC Jersey: "There is absolutely nothing like going to be in a community, particularly in the rural areas to see exactly what poverty is life.

"Until you have been in that situation it is actually impossible to imagine it.

"You can read about it in books, see it in films and on television - but to be there is totally life changing."

The States have been debating the way they spend your taxes in the coming years.

One of the proposals to save money was to cut £400,000 from the Overseas Aid budget but that was withdrawn before the discussions began.

Speaking for the Jersey Oxfam Group, Hazel Jones welcomed that decision.

She said Jersey currently spends 1.7% of its available income on aid; but that's well below the the UN target.

While recognising the generosity of islanders in helping with disasters such as the tsunami and floods, Mrs Jones says the States could do more to help people who are most in need across the world.

Have your say
Does Jersey contribute enough in overseas aid to help poorer countries? Should more be given or should Jersey give less?
