Some of the students on the course will learn guitar

Teenagers in Jersey will have the chance to learn about being in a band from more established Jersey bands. The La Motte Street Centre Rock School initiative will see 11-16 year olds learn about being in a band over the three day course in December. The idea for the programme belongs to Senior Youth Worker Ivor Richards. It is based on the Princes Trust 'Sound Live' Course that the centre has been running for three years for older musicians aged 18-25. Even though the idea for the course has only just been launched, application forms have already started coming in. The three day course will see the students receive tutoring in one of five disciplines: bass, guitar, vocals, keyboards and drums but there are only five places for each instrument.
Could the Jersey Rock school create the next 'Bravery'?

"Young people are bound to have a fantastic time, the chance of getting music lessons in your own instrument, plus the opportunity to be tutored on working together in a band is pretty unique," said Ivor. The students taking part will have music tuition in the morning, band tuition in the afternoon and then performance opportunities in the evening. The final day will be working towards a public performance to invited guests in the La Motte Street Live Room or a local music venue. You will need a basic knowledge of your instrument of choice to take part in the course. "Rock School will be open to 11-16yr olds who have a basic knowledge of their instrument at this stage we won't be opening it to absolute beginners but this could be a development if this first course is a success," said Ivor. Rock School is open to all 11-16yr olds and application forms are available from La Motte Street Youth Centre, or by calling (01534) 729081.
