Should the name of the Tennerfest event be changed?
|
The Tennerfest has fast become a major fixture of the islands gastronomic calendar and Jersey restaurants say they've done well from the event. However, with the price of Tennerfest menus ranging from £10 to £17.50 some say the name doesn't fit anymore. Paolo Joao of the Atlantique says the name should be changed as not all restaurants can afford to offer meals for just £10. He suggested a better name for the Autumn event would be Autumnfest. He says they are doing very good business but depend on customers to make up the money lost by buying alcohol. "I think we should stop this tenner thing and maybe call it something else like Autumnfest or something like that," said Paolo.
One Jersey restaurant that has managed to provide a two course meal for £10 during the Tennerfest says business has been booming. The Head Chef at Dix Neuf, Keith O'Connor, says they've had to be creative with the menu and rely on bar sales to make a profit. "I think it is due to not a lot of people being able to do the Tennerfest as a tenner. We've had to reduce our costs and cut our portions slightly. "You do get a few knock on effects with customers being unhappy with that, but if you want to give people food for £10 that's really what you've got to do now days," said Keith. Kevin O'Conner of Dix Neuf told BBC Jersey that, although they do manage to get a menu out for £10 it has got more difficult since the event was first introduce a decade ago. "We're trying to be creative but 10-12 years ago when the concept of the Tennerfest came in the economy was great, unfortunately ten years ago you could get a drink for £1.40, you've doubled the price of alcohol alone. "People still want food for £10 and we try to get it out to them although it is only two courses, we do three courses for £12.50," said Kevin O'Connor. With an increasing number of restaurants offering Tennerfest menus at more than £10, is it time for the name to change?

Brian Nibbs We must remember that Tennerfest is a brand name administered by a Guernsey company. Presumably participating restaurants have to pay to belong to the scheme etc. to cover publicity etc I do hope they have AutumnFest registered or someone might steal a march on them!! Personally, I think Autumnfest is a good idea as it allows more latitude - a new view on a well worn but proven product. Brian
