The Minster is famed for its musical heritage
|
In 2002 he famously wrote a prayer, calling on God to mend David Beckham's injured metatarsal in time for the World Cup. He plays in a pub rock band in his spare time. And now the Rev Jeremy Fletcher has been installed as the new vicar of Beverley Minister, succeeding Canon David Bailey. Appropriately enough for his new role he is passionate about music, the Minster has a long history of supporting musicians. "I grew up enjoying Status Quo", Mr Fletcher explained. "But I also like classical music, including the Sixteen, who play Baroque. So my musical taste ranges from the Quo to the Sixteen with everything in between." Mr Fletcher does not just listen to music, he plays in a pub rock band called The Floque; playing bass guitar. Another rock band is "in rehearsal." Mr Fletcher was ordained in 1988. He worked in parishes in County Durham and in Nottinghamshire before becoming Chaplain to the Bishop of Southwell in Nottinghamshire. He then moved to York Minster, where he was Precentor, organising services big and small.
He has also served on the Church of England's Liturgical Commission, writing new prayers for the church's services. Mr. Fletcher said he is looking forward to his new role: "I'm full of anticipation and very daunted and very grateful that there's been such a fantastic ministry here down the years, not least by my immediate predecessor David Bailey, and so I know I'm arriving in a place where lots of people are doing wonderful things. "I hope I'm able to have a really good overview and am looking forward to getting stuck into the detail as well as the big picture."
