The Friday Session - 11.12.2009
The Friday Session Introducing...
On-air and online every Friday night from 1800 GMT

Hereford's Ellie Goulding is nominated as the BBC's Sound of 2010 and receives a Brit Award for Critics' Choice.

Evesham band The Irony play alongside fellow townsman Alistair McGowan at the Regal Cinema.

Pershore's reggae, funk and ska band The SpoonFedz perform their live Friday Session.

Plus we're reliving highlights from all of the live performances we've heard on the The Friday Session Introducing in 2009.

Going for Gould

On this week's Friday Session, we're looking at a current day success story in the making.

Hereford singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding was nominated as the BBC's Sound Of 2010 on Monday and just two days later won the Brit Awards Critics' Choice prize.

The 22-year-old appeared on Later... with Jools Holland just weeks ago and has appeared on BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat's Introducing website.

Kidderminster Town

We hear about the humble beginnings of the group named after the numbers on the doll form - UB40.

John Coombe, from Kidderminster, regularly put rock nights on in the town and decided to diversify when he was offered the Town Hall as a venue.

Brass In Pocket by The Pretenders was number one at the time, and UB40 had just finished a UK support tour with the Hereford supergroup.

They're from Lower Moor near Pershore and formed at Kidderminster college - and this week we're proud to welcome the reggae/funksters The SpoonFedz to BBC Hereford & Worcester.

Three brothers (Pat, Steve and Tim Osbourne) hooked up with Jo Coupland, but it wasn't until their tutor, Carrie, urged them to play some of their own stuff that the band flourished.

Wychwood Festival

Festival Friday

In 2009, groups like Super Furry Animals, Supergrass and Little Boots performed there, and in 2010 BBC Hereford & Worcester's Friday Session is taking over a stage at the Wychwood Festival.

We've been asked to choose some of the best bands from Herefordshire & Worcestershire to play at this long established festival that takes place on the Cheltenham Racecourse, along with our Introducing friends in surrounding counties.

We'll be catching up with the organiser on this week's show, who can tell you a little bit about the event and the impact they're looking to have on local music.

Making a Big Impression

Their single A Man's Fears was chosen as the Friday Session single of the year in 2008, and tomorrow night The Irony get to play alongside the legendary Alistair McGowan when he returns to his hometown of Evesham.

The band will put on a rare performance at the Regal Cinema in Evesham as part of McGowan's UK tour.

Since their formation in 2004 - David, Barrie, Adam and Loz have played gigs all around London and at the Beatles' home The Cavern Club in Liverpool.

Radio studio
Studio 1a in Worcester, where many of the bands have performed in 2009

Throughout the end of this year and the start of 2010, we won't be playing a single CD, MP3, tape or vinyl - because we're giving you the music you won't be able to get anywhere else on the planet.

In 2009, over 70 bands have played live on the Friday Session Introducing... whether it'd be live in our studios, at BBC Maida Vale, or on one of our various stages at Nozstock, Wyeside and the Worcester Music Festival.

Hear some of our highlights - and listen again to many of the sessions, in full, online.

We'll bring you the full list of what's happening in Herefordshire and Worcestershire at 1940 GMT.

If you have an event you'd like publicised, email

Andy O'Hare will be here with the Hare Pieces at regular intervals throughout the show.

He goes to more gigs than anyone else we've met in the two counties (and doesn't get paid)!

If you've been to a good gig, or seen a great DJ, get in touch.

Call 0845 300 5006 and leave us a voicemail to broadcast in the last half-an-hour of the show.
