Responsibility for running military medical facilities in southern Afghanistan has recently passed to 33 Field Hospital Unit from Gosport, Hampshire.
Four hundred medical staff - many from an NHS background - man state-of-the-art facilities at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province.
BBC South Today reporters Steve Humphrey and Allen Sinclair spent a week with some of the staff who save the lives of soldiers and civilians on a daily basis.
