Glanville Fritillary

Matthew Oates hunts for the Glanville Fritillary butterflies of Compton Bay on BBC Inside Out

Compton Bay on the Isle of Wight is the northernmost habitat of the Glanville Fritillary.

The butterfly, and its caterpillar, love the heat which reflects of the bare, sandy soil of the coast and the large-leafed ringwort plantain.

It is named after Eleanor Glanville who collected butterflies in the 17th century.

In a time before women were 'allowed' to dabble in science, she was accused of witchcraft and declared insane.
