BBC News School Report

For many schools across the British Isles 11 March 2010 was BBC News School Report Day.

Pupils made their own news bulletins, web features and radio reports on issues that affect them.

The newly trained journalists were tasked with everything from story telling to filming and were helped and guided by teachers and BBC reporters.

The BBC aimed to feature as many young journalists work as possible via the School Report website.

Les Beaucamps High School

On BBC News School Report day students at Les Beaucamps High School in the Castel tackled the subject of the redevelopment of their school as their big news story.

They interviewed their headteacher Mr Le Cheminant as well as Education Minister Deputy Carol Steere on the subject.

The Beaucamps students were enthusiastic about working on news for the day.

"I've learnt to just go for it and be much more confident, and I had lots of fun," one of them said.

Another of the students highlighted how much preparation work was involved: "You have to be organised and get prepared and not just do it at the last minute."

La Mare De Carteret High School

Once the students at La Mare De Carteret High School had prepared their news they decided to rehearse their broadcast.

They said this was a good process as they were able to "learn from our mistakes" before recording the final programme.

Their teacher Mrs Venosa said: "I thought it was great and everyone did fantastically well... they thoroughly enjoyed it."

The students agreed that the day had been very worthwhile: "It's taught me a lot about how to speak and stuff," one said.

While another added: "I'ts actually quite fun researching and finding what kind of stories go on."

St Anne's School, Alderney

Alderney students airport report

In Alderney things were a bit different as rather than radio news the students at St Anne's School learnt about TV news reporting.

The group went to Alderney's airport to take a look at what goes on behind the scenes and keeps the planes flying and passengers happy.

"It's been a very good experience," one of the students said. "I didn't realise how much work there is behind the scenes."

Another of the group agreed: "It's amazing how much work can go into 90 seconds."
