Crowds enjoy football in the river

River football game attracts crowd

Bright sunshine bounced off the disturbed waters of the River Windrush in Bourton-on-the-Water on the final Bank Holiday of the summer.

But the manic splashing wasn't being caused by the paddling of small children or dogs, it was the creation of local footballers.

For more than 100 years, the annual Football in the River match has taken place in the Gloucestershire village.

Members of the Bourton Rovers Football Club form six-a-side teams to play in the ankle-deep waters between Bourton's two central bridges.

Hundreds of spectators lined the banks, many getting drenched themselves, with the village summer fete being held on the same day.

Sponsorship and donations from the event raises funds for the club.
