The new war memorial will be unveiled in November

Plans have been announced for a new war memorial to honour armed forces from the village of Little Barrington.

The memorial in the village church which records all the men from the village who served in the First World War will be in Cumbrian slate and replaces a framed memorial tablet.

It will also record that several men and women from the parish served in the Second World War 'and all came safely home'.

The names of the men from the village who served in the First World War are:

Henry Adsett, Frank Smith and John Smith (who were killed in action) and Arthur Reginald Hurst, Royce Preston, Jesse Privett, Frederick Puffitt, Ernest Search, Oliver Tidmarsh and William Tidmarsh RN who returned home.

It is good that we honour those from the village who served in past conflicts

The memorial says that 'This plaque honours those from Little Barrington who left all that was dear to them, endured hardship and faced danger, that we might live in freedom'.

The Revd David Ackerman, Vicar of Little Barrington, said: "On Remembrance Sunday the whole nation will pause and remember the human cost of war.

"Many members of Her Majesty's forces are involved in conflicts today and it is good that we look to the past to better remember the obligations we have to the men and women who serve today, as well as hoping for a more peacable future.

"It is good that we honour those from the village who served in past conflicts, as I hope we all honour those who serve today far from home in our armed services."

The memorial will be unveiled and dedicated by the Archdeacon of Cheltenham on Remembrance Sunday, 8 November, 2009, at a service beginning at 6pm.
