A school in Gloucester has been given the opportunity to contribute to an historic celebration marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The city of Berlin constructed a giant foam wall, made up of a thousand 2.5m high domino stones, and Chosen Hill School was selected to decorate the only stone to be sent from the UK.

Art students from Year 10 worked hard to complete the task before the stone was sent back to Berlin where it was lined up with the other 999 individually painted dominoes.

The foam wall was ceremonially toppled at 1900 GMT on Monday 9 November, with the last stones falling directly in front of the symbolic Brandenburg Gate.

One of the pupils involved in the project, Rachel Rea, explained that the stone had to be decorated to represent the fall of the wall and the freedom of the people.

"[Our design] is like a brick wall with vines growing up it.

"It merges into a Union Jack shape to show it is from Britain."

Another pupil, Lizzie King, said: "Lots of us hadn't learnt about the Berlin Wall when we started the project so it taught us about it.

"It's much better than learning out of a text book. Having it there makes it a lot more realistic and you want to learn more."

Of the 1000 dominoes, 980 were decorated in Germany.

Twenty stones were sent abroad to be painted by young people in countries including the UK, France, Belgium, Poland, Bangladesh, Mexico and South Africa.
