Things to do in Essex over the Bank Holiday Weekend

Here are a few suggestions of what is taking place in Essex over the Bank Holiday weekend - Friday, 29 May to Monday, 31 May.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is always an emotive sight

The Southend Air Festival celebrates its 25th year with two days of eyes-to-the-skies action on Sunday, 30 and Bank Holiday Monday.

The country's largest free air show will include many of the usual crowd pleasing displays, such as wing walkers, Hawk, Typhoon, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Sea King rescue and RAF Falcons.

Flying is due to take place between 1.30 and 5.30pm. BBC Essex will be providing commentary on Radio Airshow along the seafront, on 1530MW and online.

There will also be a host of activities on the ground, including the BBC's Bang Goes the Theory roadshow, giving you the chance to have a go at some hands-on science.

BBC Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins will be in Prittlewell Square for the Southend Air Festival along with the "Dig In" ice cream van.

You can plant a seed and take it home, get advice on gardening or pick up a free seed starter kit. For more information visit the BBC Dig In website.

Arts & Culture

Musicians of the future will be performing for a prestigious national prize at Brentwood Cathedral on Saturday, 29 May.

The inaugural Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBA) Young Musician contest will feature young singers and instrumentalists from around the country.

All the entrants have won their way through to the final by competing in club, district and regional heats.

The evening commences at 6.30pm, with entrance £5.

Kids & Family

The Tolleshunt Major Summer Fair takes place on Saturday, 29 May.

Based around St Nicholas Church, the fair will include a variety of traditional stalls selling plants, books and local produce.

There will also be the chance to have a go at pigeon shooting, fun on the bouncy castle and a shot at the coconut shy.

The fair gets under way at 1.30pm.

A taste of Chelsea can be found in west Essex this weekend

Inspired by the Chelsea Flower Show this week, but unable to get a ticket? Why not try something closer to home.

The Hatfield Broad Oak Flower Festival takes place between Saturday, 29 and Monday, 31 May.

Based in and around the village's St Mary's Parish Church, the three day festival will feature several flower displays and plant sales, as well as other stalls, pony rides and other activities for children.

If you are visiting the show on Monday, then why not cheer on the competitors in the village's annual 10km road race, which starts at 11am.

Grab your partners by the hand...

The Chelmsford & District branch of Mind are hosting a charity barn dance on Saturday, 29 May.

Held at the The Church of Ascension Hall in Maltese Road, the evening will raise money for the mental health charity.

As well as music and dancing, there will be food, beer and wine available.

The dance will begin at 7.30 until 11pm, with tickets costing £12 for adults, £8 for children and family tickets are £35.

Deborah Joys wants people to get hands-on with her art

The second trail of this year's Essex Summer of Art begins in Brentwood on Sunday, 30 May.

Now in its second year, the trail will showcase local artists at various locations around the town and surrounding areas, including public buildings and a number of local businesses.

One of the artists involved, Deborah Joys, will be encouraging visitors to her exhibition at Shenfield Library to get up close with her tactile art. Find out more here.
