Harwich has been handed the chance to host a round of next season's National Powerboat Racing Championships.
The meeting, which is expected to involve up to 50 high-performance craft will be held off the coast of the north-Essex town in July 2010.
The off-shore races will take place on a course that is no more than three nautical miles long and will last approximately 20 minutes.
There will be races for five classes of boats including OCRs, Zapcats and V24s.
"It will be very fast and very spectacular, with lots of action," said event organiser Chris Spraggons.
"We're hoping it's going to generate a lot of publicity for Harwich and bring a lot of people into the town and put us back on the map as far as the tourist industry is concerned," he added.
The meeting will take place over the weekend of 31 July-01 August 2010.
