Cycling's Alex Dowsett from Cock Clarks, near Chelmsford took the Olympic Hopeful award.

"It is a surprise, it is a real honour," said Dowsett.

The silver medal Alex won in Delhi at the Commonwealth Games has helped to push his ambitions to new levels.

"Cycling is such a competitive sport, I sort of doubted my chances. But getting that silver medal has helped me to realise that it [2012 London Olympics] really is a possibility," he added.

St. James Primary School, Harlow carried off the School of the Year trophy.

The athlete and volunteer awards are selected by a judging panel from nominations sent in by members of the public.
