Zeppelin fragment tells story of war in Colchester

Fragment from Zeppelin collected

A piece of a Zeppelin airship from the First World War is one of the latest objects to be added to the BBC's A History of the World website.

The fragment was brought to the BBC Bus in Colchester by Michael Hunnable.

His grandfather collected it in Little Wigborough after the airship came down in September, 1916.

"This fragment is made from aluminium alloy and it's an important part of wartime history," said Essex historian, Jonathan Catton.

"Zeppelins were rigid airships used by the Germans as bombers and scouts,"

"They were feared and dreaded during World War One," he added.

It has now become part of a BBC and British Museum online archive telling the history of the world through objects.
