Unique pictures of 1953 floods

The RAF have released aerial photographs of the 1953 floods that affected the coast of Essex.

Some of the rare reconnaissance pictures were previously classified and show how the tidal surge engulfed houses and land.

The images show Jaywick, near Clacton, which was particularly badly flooded with 37 people losing their lives.

Further down the Essex coast, on Canvey Island 58 people died and around 13,000 residents evacuated.
