A 14-year-old musician from Essex will have one his compositions performed at this year's BBC Proms.

Sebastian Black, from Dedham, won the opportunity through the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers Competition with his composition 'Post Scriptum'.

The piece will be played by the Aurora Orchestra at the Royal College of Music on 6, August and broadcast on Radio 3.

"It's a breakthrough to have a piece played at a renowned, very English festival that everyone knows," he said.

"It's also a good experience as a musician to have music played by a good orchestra - the Aurora Orchestra are pretty good."

He added he was looking forward to working with the orchestra ahead of the performance.

"There are rehearsals on the day of the performance and I'm planning on maybe making a few changes," he said.

"I'm having to think very carefully about how I do it in the Royal College of Music, because it's a different setting from where it was originally played."

His winning piece, 'Post Scriptum', was written earlier this year whilst on an Aldeburgh Young Musicians course in Suffolk.

It was described by the competition's judging panel as 'a very daring and intense work of real maturity'.

"It was a piece which I felt quite pleased with and it seemed to draw a portrait of myself as a composer and maybe as a person as well," he said.

As part of the prize Sebastian, who started playing the piano aged three and began composing three-years-ago, has also received a BBC Commission.

He hopes his success at such an early stage in his musical life will bode well for the future.

"I'd like to continue composing, definitely, and would like to one day write an opera - I think that would be good," he said.

"I quite like conducting; I've never really conducted and I'd probably like to conduct my own music as well.

"I like playing the piano as well, so I'd like to fit that in too somehow - but I don't know, maybe I'll become a doctor!"

The 2010 BBC Proms season begins on Friday, 16 July.
