An art collective in Southend have broken the world record for creating the longest continuous line of bunting.

The record-bid was organised by Chalkwell-based METAL and involved people from the local community.

The bunting was measured at 1.3 miles, the same length as Southend pier, and comprised 8,997 individual flags.

"We're really pleased with the result it's been quite a large project so to see it come through is brilliant," said project manager Nastassja Simensky.

"I think we've tried to make it as difficult as we can for it to be beaten in the near future," she added.

Each individual flag had to measure 29 centimetres along its two longest edges and 19 centimetres along the top.

It is hoped the bunting will stretch along the pier throughout the 2010 summer season.
