Audio slideshow: The Pope in Edinburgh

Pope Benedict XVI began his first state visit to Britain on Thursday.

He landed at Edinburgh airport and toured streets of the city, which staged a St Ninian's Day parade to mark the occasion.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh exchanged gifts with him at the Palace of Holyrood House.

Pope Benedict met other religious and secular leaders before travelling to Glasgow to celebrate Mass at Bellahouston Park.

Nine-year-old Connor O'Toole shook hands with Pope Benedict when he left the Popemobile to meet the crowd on Princes Street.
