Scotland's first Benedictine monastic community was established in Dunfermline

Over the summer enter into the world of the Normans.

Originally Vikings from Scandinavia, the Normans travelled to France before venturing to these shores.

David I invited them to Scotland, believing that they would strengthen his position.

Professor Bartlett from St Andrews University discusses their influence in Scotland and on Dumfermline in particular.

Dunfermline Abbey features in "The Normans" on Wednesday 11 August on BBC Two Scotland.

Events to celebrate the impact of the Normans are being held at Coulter Motte, Dunfermline Palace and Abbey, Edinburgh Castle, St Fillan's and Whithorn Priory until October.
