Getting onto the Big Screen

BBC Big Screen
Crowds watch Wimbledon on Plymouth's Big Screen

The Big Screen in Plymouth city centre's Piazza is hungry for film and video content created in Devon and Cornwall to showcase to the thousands of people who pass by every day.

All submissions will be considered on merit, but the screen cannot show commercial advertisements, hard-hitting campaign led content or films that include music which hasn't had copyright clearance.

It's the job of Plymouth Big Screen producer Kevin Heathorn to sift through submissions and schedule all the local content.

He's delighted at the material which has already been submitted.

"Devon has a growing reputation as a hub of creativity and I've seen some some outstanding videos," said Kevin.

"In its first year of operation the Big Screen has shown more than 200 locally produced films with the promise of lots more to come.

"We are keen to show a wide range of content including material from schools and colleges, universities, amateur film-makers, film-making collectives, animators, community groups and photographers," he added.

As well as video content, the Big Screen acts as a focal point for community and civic events taking place in Armada Way. During 2009 more than 25 live events have taken advantage of the screen's outside broadcast capability.

"We can plug video cameras directly into the screen when events are taking place in The Piazza, giving the audience a completely different viewpoint," said Kevin.

"If people have an an idea for the Big Screen then we'd love to hear from them."
