Organisers of the 2009 Poppy Appeal in Devon say the public are responding more than ever, and believe it is due to events in Afghanistan.

Devon County Secretary of the Royal British Legion, Richard Jennings, said the recent deaths of British troops in Afghanistan had affected people.

"Unfortunately, recent events mean the public are more aware," he said.

"I've been into the city centre in Exeter and I've seen more people wearing poppies than ever before.

"And as soon as we're putting the collection tins out, they're filling up.

"It's not just about the money - it's the act of remembrance, " said Mr Jennings.

Communities across Devon are marking Remembrance Day with services and events - in Plymouth, the memorial on the Hoe has been lit up as poppies.
