Accolade for Plymouth's beach hut heroes

Dessie and Jim Carnell show us around their 'room with a view'

Dessie and Jim Carnell have fond memories of the row of beach huts on Plymouth Hoe.

"We had used them for years when our children were young," said Jim. "Dessie especially became very attached to them."

So when Plymouth City Council announced they were to be demolished, the couple stepped in to save them.

"That was in 1988," said Jim. "We were just so sorry to see them get in a state of disrepair."

Dessie and Jim spruced them all up and let them out for 10 years.

And, with them fully booked during the summer months, the beach huts flourished - and now, the city council again manages them.

The couple have been named Beach Hut Heroes for southern England in the Beach Hut of the Year competition.

Jim and Dessie show BBC Spotlight's Carole Madge around the huts with a view.
