Devon artist Alex Hartley has won a £500,000 commission from the Arts Council to provide the South West's cultural offering for the London 2012 Olympics. Alex, from Dunkeswell, won the race to the pot of money with his project to bring an Arctic Ocean island - called nowhereisland - on a tour of the South West. The judges were hugely impressed with the project, but some people say it's a waste of money.

Who would have thought a cuddly little creature like the dormouse could stir up such a debate? At a time when conservation groups - including the Devon Wildlife Trust - are investing effort and money into assessing dormouse numbers and providing the perfect habitat for them - BBC Autumnwatch presenter Chris Packham has suggested they are not deserving of all the attention.

A new bus poster campaign is raising a few eyebrows in Torbay. Torbay Council is putting what it calls "cheeky" pictures of bottoms on the rear ends of local buses, in a campaign to stop people dropping cigarette butts. What do you think of the campaign?

Hundreds of organisations are using grant money from Children in Need to help improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. Despite the economic conditions, the 2008 Appeal raised a record breaking £38m which has helped more than 700 projects across the UK. In Devon, Children in Need is currently funding 25 projects having awarded £1,055,602 in local grants.

Lorraine Kelly has lived in six houses during her 64 years - all of them within a couple hundred yards of each other in the Plymouth estate now known as North Prospect. Lorraine is intensely proud of her Swilly origins and is angered by plans to demolish the council estate and replace it with new homes. An idea to issue parking fines to people who park too far from the kerb in Torbay has sparked a lively exchange of views on the BBC Devon website. The idea is receiving overwhelming backing from those who've contributed to BBC Devon's online debate. Torbay Council said it may consider fining anyone leaving a gap of more than 50cm (20in) from the pavement. We have been inundated with messages from across the country - with most backing the suggestion.

A green tourism organisation has suggested that holidaymakers who come to the South West should be offered less meat. But holiday accommodation firm Devon Farms, which has 130 members, is dismayed and angry at the advice. What do you think?
Customer service in Devon
Do you get good service or is it more a case of 'computer says no'?

According to a new survey Plymouth has come second from bottom in a study of customer service in 119 UK towns and cities. Exeter also fared poorly coming 109th in the research by Retail Eyes. Torquay was the best in Devon but still only managed 101st in the rankings. What do you think about customer service in Devon?
