It's an amazing development for a group of musicians who, according to Rob, got together to keep their hands in and have a bit of fun.
"There are nine full time members in the band and we are scattered all about south Devon - Brixham, Paignton, Bovey Tracey, Ivybridge, and also Exeter.
"And we also have people who are stand-in band members, mainly in the brass section because they play for other bands as well.
Rob Murphy says there is a huge ska fan base in Devon
"Many of us have previously been full-time musicians but are now doing this part-time, because it's something we enjoy."
The Simmertones - who are unsigned - play gigs all around Devon, which is great news for the county's growing band of ska fans.
"There is a huge fan base for ska down here," said Rob.
"And with the Specials re-forming, it has brought ska to people who missed it first time round."
In 2009, the band released a mini-album of seven tracks, including Doctor Who, which is available from their website.
Some of the tracks are written by them, others are cover versions.
You can listen to one of their own songs, Do What You Got To Do, using the audio link.
And catch a short snippet of their version of Doctor Who using the audio link - the full version, together with more tracks and information are on the band's website. They are also on Facebook and would love to hear from people.
The Simmertones will be chatting to John Govier on BBC Radio Devon and across the region on BBC in the South West on the late show on Sunday 28 March 2010. John will also be playing some of their tracks - that's between 10pm and 11pm.
