Smeaton's Tower through the ages

Audio slideshow: Archive images and paintings of Smeaton's Tower, with its 250-year history narrated by BBC Spotlight's Justin Leigh.

Smeaton's Tower has stood tall on Plymouth Hoe since 1884, but it was once a beacon of light to vessels 14 miles off the Devon coast.

Its lights first shone on 16 October 1759, making it 250-years-old.

John Smeaton's feat of engineering was moved brick by brick to The Hoe from 1882-1884.

BBC Spotlight's Justin Leigh tells the amazing story of the lighthouse.

This audio slideshow has been made with the help of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, where the archive images are on display.
