Vaughan enjoying the quiet life

Vaughan laps up the acclaim with wife Nichola after Ashes glory in 2005

It's a world away from the packed venues which played host to his team's 2005 Ashes triumph.

But for the former England captain Michael Vaughan, Baslow is a perfect place to be following his retirement from the sport.

The 35-year-old batsman decided to bring the curtain down on his glittering career earlier this year.

And now he says he's delighted to have left the hectic lifestyle behind in favour of a much more sedate existence.

He told BBC Radio Derby's Ed George it was the simple pleasures of life in Baslow that he enjoyed the most.

He said: "It's nice to head out of the door and walk up the hill for a morning stroll with the dog. There's a couple of good pubs and I find the wild weather refreshing.

"It's a nice part of the world - very relaxing. After the hustle and bustle of city life and travelling around the world, it's good to come back to Baslow for a bit of peace and tranquility."

The one-time leading batsman in world cricket is now a Test Match Special pundit and has recently released a second autobiography Time to Declare.

He told Ed he rates Lords and the Sydney Cricket Ground as his favourite venues for cricket but doesn't have too many memories of Derbyshire's County Ground.

He explained: "To be honest I've not played at Derbyshire all that much. I've been in the England set-up for the past ten years and Yorkshire haven't played here much when I've been in the side.

"But I am a big friend of John Morris and I think he's doing a good job - he's getting things moving.

"Derbyshire find it difficult without the finances of many of the other clubs but they've very competitive and that's all you can ask of smaller clubs like Derby."
