Some of Europe's most powerful brains were in Derby this weekend for the European Quizzing Championship.

The event, which took place at the Derby Conference Centre, featured former winners of TV's Mastermind and Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire.

England's Olav Bjortomt was crowned individual champion at the event, which saw questions posed to competitors in teams, pairs and on their own.

The contest has previously been held in Oslo, Paris, Blackpool and Ghent.

Jesse Honey, the winner of this year's BBC Mastermind, was among those competing.

He told BBC Radio Derby: "It's all very gentlemanly and sportsmanlike but at the same it's deeply competitive.

"There's so much to learn. You've got to basically try to know everything that's ever happened and everything we've ever discovered.

"But the best thing is England's one of the best in the world at it."

The event, which first took place in 2004, is organised by the International Quizzing Association's British branch.

Second place went to Finland's Tero Kalliolevo and England's Pat Gibson came third.

More information about the event can be found at the European Quiz Championship website.
