Suzanne Cannon's lush landscapes
Suzanne Cannon
Suzanne enjoys unsing evocative titles for her paintings

Suzanne Cannon smiles as she remembers taking to painting so much she became teacher's pet in art class.

As an adult she initially favoured watercolours, but five years ago "on a lovely sunny Sunday morning" decided to try her hand at oils - and was hooked!

This was the point at which her work took off commercially, with vibrancy of colour and play of light becoming her trademarks.

And since taking that big step, Suzanne has never looked back!

Dramatic weather

She describes her landscapes as semi-representational, and she works from combinations of sketches, watercolours and photographs: "Oils is impractical outdoors," she'll tell you - "the flies love it!"

With her liking for dramatic weather she's not put off by wind and rain, and you're most likely to spot her taking in the scene in the early morning or late evening when the light, too, has its own drama.

Her subjects are often locations in the Peak or the Lake District, though Suzanne deliberately avoids naming and therefore limiting them. She prefers evocative titles like Gift of the Day.

Galleries and exhibitions

With up to 31 paintings on the go at once, her work has no trouble these days finding its way into galleries and exhibitions - most recently at the Great Dome Art Fayre in Buxton.

She doesn't shy away from comment and opinion: "As long as a piece of art stimulates conversation it's done its job".

With a studio custom-built at her Matlock home, Suzanne Cannon seems set to see her signature attract attention for the foreseeable future. Her work "sells and prints up well", she confirms.

Seems her Grandma made a shrewd investment!
