Five youth hostels to go up for sale

Youth hostels have been popular with generations of hikers and backpackers at home and abroad.

So the recent announcement that the Youth Hostel Association is to sell five properties in our region is already proving controversial.

In the Lake District, the hostels to close are Derwentwater at Keswick, Helvellyn at Glenridding and Hawkshead.

In the North East, Newcastle's hostel in Jesmond Road will close, as will the one at Osmotherly, in North Yorkshire.

Joanne Carter from BBC Look North looks at why they're being sold.
