Cumbria & the start of the town plan

Peter Lugg has been to Whitehaven, in West Cumbria, to see a painting which tells the story of the Lowther family.

The painting of Whitehaven by Matthias Read shows the grid layout of the town designed by Sir John Lowther.

Lowther wanted to improve the living conditions of his workers and built this grid system of streets and housing.

The painting was commissioned by Lowther and shows clearly the designed Georgian town.
