HMS Somerset
The present HMS Somerset is the fourth to bear the name. She was launched on 24 June 1994

Fowey is no stranger to boats of many shapes and sizes. However from Friday 26 February the Cornish port will be hosting a huge vessel.

The Royal Navy warship HMS Somerset will be visiting Fowey.

The 4900 tonne, Type 23 frigate will arrive at her mooring on the Friday afternoon for a three-day visit.

As part of its brief stay the crew will be welcoming members of the public onboard to see how the frigate works and learn more about life at sea.

Powerful and versatile with the capability to operate anywhere in the world, the Type 23 frigate is the mainstay of the modern surface fleet.

The 13 Type 23 frigates form half of the total frigate/destroyer force in the Royal Navy.

As part of her training, on the Friday evening the Commanding Officer, Commander Andrew Burns, will host a reception and capability demonstration for invited guests from the local community.

On the Saturday, groups from local cadet forces will be having tours of the ship and the CO will be hosting a group of high profile guests for lunch that will include Lady Mary Holborow the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, and the Mayor of Fowey, Councillor Anne Boosey.

On Sunday 28 February the ship will be open to the general public from 11am to 4pm. A boat from Fowey River and Sea Cruises will leave from Town Quay on the hour and half hour (last boat 3.30pm).

There is no charge for this visit but priority will be given to visitors in possession of a boarding pass which will be available at the Customer Services desk in the Asda Supermarket, St Austell and the Tourist Information Centre, 5 South Street, Fowey.

For health and safety reasons visitors are requested to wear trousers and flat soled shoes.

Commander Burns said: "We are very much looking forward to spending time in Fowey and I hope as many local people as possible will come and see the ship for themselves this weekend."

HMS Somerset will sail out of Fowey on the evening tide around 5pm on Sunday 28 February.
