The Merlin Centre looks after MS sufferers throughout Cornwall
|
The idea for the Merlin Project came about in 2001 by a retired doctor whose own daughter suffered from MS. Eight years after Derek Murphy founded the project the Merlin Centre is now up and running in Hewas Water near St Austell. Now fundraising is underway to raise £150,000 to complete stage two of the centre. The Merlin Centre has two pressure chambers providing oxygen known to relieve certain MS symptoms. Multiple Sclerosis actually means 'many scars'. The words are used to describe a major disease of the nervous system, which literally becomes 'scarred' and stops functioning properly.

Cornwall's Merlin Centre has a large well equipped gymnasium, used principally for physiotherapy. It has up to date equipment which includes a Levo chair, medimotion machine, treadmill, parallel bars, Oswestry Standing Frame, wobble boards, physio balls etc. The Merlin Centre also offers a range of therapies in a friendly welcoming environment, aiding system management, promoting and enabling independence to improve well being and quality of life. BBC Radio Cornwall's Laurence Reed went along to visit the Merlin Cenre, broadcasting his show from there.
