The Berlin Wall: Twenty years on
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall had been erected in 1961

November 2009 marks 20 years since Berliners celebrate the historic fall of the Berlin Wall.

It had been erected in 1961 on the orders of East Germany's former leader Walter Ulbricht stop people leaving for West Germany.

Ecstatic crowds immediately began to clamber on top of the Wall and hack large chunks out of the 28-mile (45-kilometre) barrier.

Here in Cornwall people have been remembering the historic events.

Viviana Ludwig from Germany now lives in Illogan. She says it was a time of great celebration:

Berlin Wall in the '60s
Border guards manned the wall when it was built

"Looking back I would say it was a very exciting period. Something big was happening. It happened very fast.

"As far as I can remember it was one of those moments it's difficult to describe, I have to say it was a peaceful solution.

"I don't know if people really had that much time to prepare. It was a massive reunion for separated friends and family."

"It was one of those moment where you just get a shiver and you're speechless. It was so unique and so monumental."

Christian Pohle is also originally from Germany, but now lives in Newquay:

Berlin Wall
Communist East Germany erected the 155km (96-mile) concrete wall

"I had British people coming and saying, I always try to imagine what it would be like if London was divided with a wall all around it, and they just couldn't picture it. I still think Berlin is a wonderful, wonderful city."

World leaders joined thousands of people marking 20 years since the Berlin Wall's fall, an event that paved the way for the end of the Cold War.
