A brief history of Cambridge

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is celebrating 800 years of education, innovation and influence.

As part of Cambridge 800, events will take place until the end of November including a Festival of Ideas and talks on the university's role in the city.

Professor Jeremy Saunders, in charge of Cambridge 800 said: "The University is more than the stereotyped images of punting and May Balls."

Famous alumni include Darwin, Newton, Stephen Hawking, and Watson and Crick.
