2009 events for Remembrance Day

This month, world leaders and people across the globe will pause to remember the sacrifices of those who perished in two world wars and the conflicts since.

Many people across Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and Bath will join them in observing of two minutes silence.

This year, Remembrance Sunday is on 8 November. Former soldiers will gather to lay wreaths of poppies as a mark of respect to fallen comrades.

Two minutes silence will also be observed on 11 November, Armistice Day.

Bristol's annual commemoration at the Cenotaph on Colston Avenue will take place on Sunday 8 November.

Several roads around the central area will be closed from 10am to 12pm and the routes of some buses will be diverted during this time.

Events commemorating Remembrance Day, organised by local branches of the Royal British Legion, will be happening across Bath and North East Somerset on Sunday, 8 November. These include:

Keynsham: There will be a service in St John's Church, High Street at 9.40am, followed by a Remembrance parade. From 11am to 11.30am, wreaths will be placed at the War Memorial in Bath Hill.

Bath: A wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the War Memorial, Royal Victoria Park at 11am. The Royal British Legion Remembrance Day March will pass the Guildhall at 2.30pm, followed by a Civic Procession to Bath Abbey for a 3pm service.

Commemorations in Weston-super-Mare begin at 10.45am with a Royal British Legion parade from the High Street to Grove House. That will be followed by a civic procession departing from Grove House at 1050am. A service will be held at Grove House at 11am.

In South Gloucestershire, local councillors will be attending several services, including:

Yate: A parade to St Mary's Church begins at 9.30am for a service at 10am.

Warmley: A parade, service and wreath-laying will take place at the Memorial Park from 10am.

Hanham: There will be a service and wreath-laying at Hanham War Memorial.

Staple Hill: At 1040am a Remembrance parade will make its way to Page Park for a service and wreath-laying at 11am.

Mangotsfield: There will be a service at 12.15 in the Alex Memorial Garden.

Kingswood: At 2.30pm a parade will depart from Cecil Car Park along Regent Street. A service at 2.45pm follows at the Holy Trinity Church.

Thornbury: There will be a service and wreath-laying at St Mary's Church at 2.30pm.

Soundwell: At 6.30pm there will be a service at St Stephen's Church.

In Bath and North East Somerset, the annual Remembrance Day service will be held at the Haycombe Cemetery, Bath, on Wednesday, 11 November. Everyone is welcome to attend the service which starts at 10.45am on the grass between the Cross of Remembrance, war graves and the Blitz graves.

The Rector and the Mayor of Bath will lead a short service outside the West Door of Bath Abbey on Wednesday, 11 November. At 11am maroons will be fired from the Parade Gardens to mark the start and finish of the two minutes silence.

In Combe Down there will be a service and wreath-laying. The service will take place at 10.40 am in Holy Trinity Church and everyone is invited to go to Firs Field just after 11am to lay wreaths at the War Memorial.

BBC Radio Bristol will be observing two minutes silence on air at 11am on Sunday 8 November and Wednesday 11 November 2009.
