The start of Balloon Fiesta week was marked on Monday, 9 August with a city centre launch of hot-air balloons.
Several balloons took off from College Green, off Park Street, ahead of the event which starts on Thursday.
Thousands of visitors will flock to Ashton Court estate on the outskirts of the city for the annual festival.
Highlights include the two night glows - where balloons light up in time to music - on Thursday and Saturday evenings.
Huge crowds are also expected for Sunday afternoon's Red Arrows display, which will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
As the balloons took off on Monday the light wind over Bristol took them in a north-easterly direction.
The grand finale of the night glows - which will be compered by BBC Radio Bristol's Peter Rowell - will be a firework display.
Many of the balloons landed in Stoke Park, near to the M32 and Dower House, after a short flight over a few miles.
