Bristol City stadium is approved

Councillors were "minded to approve" the new stadium on Wednesday

Bristol City's plan for a £65m stadium on green belt land has won the support of planners - what do you think of the decision?

The club wants to move from Ashton Gate to a new 30,000-seater venue.

Following Wednesday's meeting, Bristol City Council's Development Control Committee said it was minded to approve the plan.

The club's chief executive, Colin Sextone, said: "The biggest hurdle was they [councillors] are minded to approve a stadium in the green belt and we have got through that.

"We have a lot of work to do - but positive."

Trish Young, of the community group Ashton Vale Heritage, said: "We have looked at the detail and it isn't going to work.

"The money won't stack up and the transport won't stack up, so I think we will be back here in six month's time and it will just fall apart then."

But what do you think of the decision?

Are you behind the new Bristol City stadium or do you think planners were wrong to approve it? Let us know and we'll publish a selection of comments here.

Bristol desperately sporting facilities as the current ones are either rubbish or non-existent. For that reason alone I'm glad that the stadium plan has been approved
Steve, Bristol

Now that we seem to have decided that the green belt is worth sacrificing for a football stadium, opening the door for further development I find it difficult to understand why we could not set it closer to a motorway, isolated from residential areas, without the chance of drivers trying to use street parking.

Many times I've noticed undeveloped slip road beginnings on the M4 corridor, just outside Bristol, I wonder what was planned for there? Then of course there little used Aust Services, which would have been ideally suited for a stadium/entertainments venue, no vision there as usual, so instead we plonk it in a picturesque greenbelt area, opening the door for god-knows what!

Bristol must be the only large city without a top-class football stadium, so last night's result must come as great news to those who want City to aspire to the top echelons of soccer, as well as bringing wealth and employment to the area. But I am honest enough to state that should I be living in the proposed area, would I be so keen to see these plans go ahead?

Very interesting to hear a caller eagerly anticipating the arrival of bendy buses, the part they could play in filling the new stadium, but I'd be surprised if see them on our roads, at least no for a while. Political consensus in London seems to suggest that they are more than a little dangerous and destined for scrap as nobody seems to be interested in buying them second-hand form the London fleet. Somebody needs to get the transport infrastructure right and bendy buses don't look to be the answer!

As a Rovers supporter - what a pity we did not put in a bid for Ashton Gate!
Trevor, Cadbury Heath

I wish Bristol City all the best over their plans for the new stadium. As a Bristol Rovers supporter I think back to the dealings we have had with the city council and it seems that they delight in putting any obstacle in the way of this development. However my main point is that it about time North Somerset, South Glos and the city councils got together to try to solve this and many other problems affecting all parts of the city, something they all seem reluctant to do! We are one of the largest city's in the country yet we do not possess a decent entertainment centre nor a sports centre.
