Professor Mike Benton from the University of Bristol says a £295,000 Heritage Lottery grant will save the bones of a dinosaur found in South Gloucestershire.
Over the next three years it is hoped enough bones will be recovered to make a complete skeleton, which could then be displayed in the city's new museum.
The dinosaur, a Thecodontosaurus, has been encased in rock at Tytherington for some 210 million years.
