Banksy's famous Mild Mild West mural on Stokes Croft in Bristol has been vandalised.
The damage took place overnight from Sunday to Monday when red paint was thrown over it.
Up-close the damage is clear - the mural was voted as the city's favourite 'alternative landmark' in a recent BBC poll.
Planning permission was in place for a glass-fronted atrium to cover Mild Mild West.
Guerrilla artist Banksy has a huge following in the city, and his work has recently sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Two artists from the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft work to clean off the paint on Monday.
The paint used was water-based, so the artists were able to work at removing it from the mural.
The Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft says that Stokes Croft 'boasts more honesty, beauty and truth than any other part of the city.'
