Staying safe on Bristol's streets

personal alarm
Police say that carrying a personal alarm is advisable

Following the recent attacks in Bristol it is worth reminding yourself of basic personal safety information.

Avon & Somerset Police give this advice on staying safe on the streets:

  • Don't walk or jog alone, especially after dark
  • Avoid short cuts and deserted areas and try to keep to well-lit, busy streets
  • After dark, avoid large bushes or dark areas where a person could hide
  • Avoid using personal stereos or radios as you might not hear people approaching
  • Do not wear a lot of jewellery
  • Carry your bag close to your body with the opening towards your body
  • Keep the use of cash and mobile phones discreet
  • When going to your car or home, have your keys at hand
  • Consider carrying a personal attack alarm

If you are on a night out:

  • Think about how you are going to get home - consider pre-booking taxis
  • Stay with your group and make sure somebody knows where you are
  • Do not walk home alone
  • Be wary of casual requests from strangers - they may have ulterior motives
