A celebration of culture, music and food is being celebrated

Bradford remembers its rich cultural heritage with a series of events celebrating Black History month. Bradford City footballer, Cess Podd, and popular comedian Charlie Williams who performed across West Yorkshire, are two household names which helped break down stereotypes against black people. Events to celebrate black culture in Bradford include gospel singing, drama, storytelling, cooking demonstration classes, dance and classical music.

The Peacemakers project in Bradford is hosting a tasting and demonstration of traditional African meals for special occasions. Yemi Fagborun says traditional African foods are very popular but more and more people aren't sure how to cook them: "We are cooking lots of different meals from different African countries. Some foods you would have at a wedding, others at a party or food you would eat after having a baby.

"We are starting off with pounded yam, a traditional Nigerian meal, this would be served with vegetable, egunsi or okra soup. One of our favourites is fried plantain also known as Dodo. We are also cooking fried rice which is good for vegetarians, as it has a lot of vegetables in it, along with cooking stew and maze and beans. Finally for dessert, we are cooking puff puff which are balls of flour mixture with other ingredients, fried soft similar to a donut.
Other events celebrating Black History Month include storytelling and traditional Dominican dance at Bradford Central library and an open microphone night at the University of Bradford. For a full list of events click on the link below.
