Twenty four windows in Saltaire will be lit up as part of the calendar

The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Saltaire with the village becoming a "living advent calendar".

In the run up to the big day, 24 window displays will be lit up on consecutive evenings throughout the village.

This is the fifth year the Saltaire advent calendar will reveal itself.

Co-ordinator David Starley said: "Although the living advent calendar has an arts focus, it's primarily a fun event which really brings the community together in the run-up to Christmas."

Tongue-in-cheek

Over the past few years, advent window topics have ranged from traditional nativity scenes to more tongue-in-cheek displays, such as a silhouette of Morecambe and Wise tripping the light fantastic.

The calendar has been created for people in Saltaire village but visitors from across West Yorkshire are being invited along to take a look at the illuminated creations over the next few weeks.

David Starley said the calendar was proving increasingly popular, not least among people in Saltaire who wanted to make their very own contributions.

He said: "From schoolchildren to professional artists, we have had more applications to take part than there were window spaces this year.

"We can't wait to see the latest creations."

Not-for-profit organisation Saltaire Inspired is behind the living advent calendar.

Access to art

The organisation's aim is to create opportunities for communities by offering access to art for all, with specific focus on education and cultural diversity.

The living advent calendar is one of a number of Christmas events taking place in Saltaire.

The village is one of the UK's 28 World Heritage Sites - alongside such landmarks as Stonehenge, Fountains Abbey and Hadrian's Wall.

The official launch of the living advent calendar takes place in Saltaire on Friday 3 December from 5pm to 7pm.

The event features carol singers, a live band, stalls and mulled wine - as well as the traditional Christmas tree grand switch-on at 6.30pm.
