Election 2010: BBC WM hosts first of three debates.

Lorely Burt MP (Lib Dem), Jacqui Smith MP (Labour), Margot James PPC (Cons) and college Vice Principal Tricia Burton discuss topical election issues

A number of issues came under the spotlight at a pre-election public debate which was hosted by BBC WM on Wednesday 14 April.

An all-female audience from across the West Midlands put their questions to a panel of senior politicians.

The question time style debate took place at NEW College in Redditch.

It was the first of three public forum debates that BBC WM is hosting in the run up to the General Election on 6 May.

On the panel were three West Midlands Parliamentary Candidates: Jacqui Smith for Labour (Redditch), Margot James for the Conservatives (Stourbridge) and Liberal Democrat Lorely Burt (Solihull).

They were joined by Tricia Burton who is NEW College Vice Principal for Strategy and Development.

The debate was hosted by BBC WM mid-morning presenter Joanne Malin.

It was recorded and in this first part of two excerpts from the evening, the panel field questions on a number of topics including the possibility of a hung parliament and expenses.

BBC WM is hosting two more debates and the highlights will be broadcast on 22 and 29 April 2010.

The candidates announced so far in the Redditch constituency are: UK Independence Party: Anne Davis; British National Party: Andy Ingram; Nobody Party: Deek Fletcher; Liberal Democrat: Nicholas Lane; Conservative: Karen Lumley; English Democrats: Vincent Schittone; Labour: Jacqui Smith; Independent: Paul Swansborough; Green: Kevin White.

The candidates announced so far in the Stourbridge constituency are: Liberal Democrat: Chris Bramall; Green: Will Duckworth; Conservative: Margot James; Labour: Lynda Waltho; British National Party: Robert Weale; UK Independence Party: Madeline Westrop.

The candidates announced so far in Solihull are: Liberal Democrat: Lorely Burt; UK Independence Party: John Ison; Labour: Sarah-Jayne Merrill; British National Party: Andrew Terry; Conservative: Maggie Throup.

Election night coverage

On election night, Paul Franks will be on air with reporters at counts across the West Midlands bringing the latest results and Ed Doolan will chair a live public debate with a panel of guests.

There will also be a post- general election round up on Phil Upton's Breakfast Show the morning after.
