Beth Tweddle was "really proud" to be launching the Open Weekend
People in the West Midlands are being encouraged to try something new to celebrate the two year countdown to the London 2012 Games.
There are over 50 events taking place across the region between Friday, 23 to Sunday, 25 July to mark Open Weekend 2010.
The theme is 'challenge yourself' and organisations are putting on sporting, arts and cultural activities.
This will be the third year the nationwide event has taken place.
World Champion launch
Activities taking place in Birmingham include an arts festival in Handsworth and an Arts Mela organised by South Asian Arts organisation Sampad at the mac arts centre.
In June 2010, Sampad helped world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle learn dance moves as part of her challenge when she was in Birmingham to launch the weekend.
London 2012 Chair, Lord Sebastian Coe said: "Open Weekend is another opportunity for thousands of people to join in with the London 2012 Games."
David Moorcroft, Chair of the West Midlands Leadership Group for 2012 said they were delighted that "once again a huge range of organisations have signed up to be part of the country's biggest celebration of culture, sport and creativity".
