Uncover the mystery of genetics at Thinktank this half term

From Gigglefest at central library to building bird boxes and feeders, there's plenty of inexpensive family things to do in Birmingham and Solihull over the half term holiday.


Gigglefest is Birmingham's comedy festival especially for children at Centre for the Child, Central Library. The Scottish Falsetto Socks and the Potted Pirates will deliver side-splitting stories, comedy workshops and hilarious sketches.

Kids Swim4Free

Kids can keep active by swimming for free at Birmingham City Council pools.

Activities at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Free family activities are available between 11am and 4pm every day of the school holidays and every weekend, with arts, crafts and much more.

Visitors can experience art through touch, sound and sight. Step inside a 17th century painting in the In Touch gallery, or find out how art is made with hands-on multi-media demonstrations of painting and woodcarving to weaving and jewellery making.

Music workshops at Touchwood

Clive's Easylearn Pop Music School will be running free music workshops throughout the half term holiday at Touchwood in Solihull. Pop along for the opportunity to have a free mini-lesson in guitar, bass, drums or keyboard, followed by an exciting jam session with their CRB approved tutors.

Bird Box Making

Join the rangers and help your feathered friends find a home by building a bird box.

There are two sessions you can book in for either 11am - 12 noon or 1pm - 2pm please state which you would like to join when booking.

Half term at Thinktank

Throughout half term discover what DNA is, explore hands-on exhibits and join in highly interactive workshops.

Visitors can to take part in the 'Gene-eration Science Show' exploring the world of genetics, and discover what DNA actually is. There's also the 'Gen(ie) in a Bottle Workshop', a hands-on session where kids can make their very own DNA from cheek swabs and take a sample home with them.

For younger visitors there is the 'Gene Genie' storytelling, where little ones can join in on an adventure to find out if the three Princes; Dee, Enn and Ay, overcome the Gene Genie's challenges to win the hand of the lovely Princess Helia.

Half term at Birmingham Nature Centre

Children can book a place on special workshops to make a feeder for one of the animals, feed the sheep and goats or even make a miniature garden to take home.
