Amnesty for coup plotters in Niger There's been a demonstration outside the national assembly in Niger, in protest at plans to grant an amnesty to people who have participated in coups. The protesters were mostly those closely associated with the late President Ibrahim Bare Mainassara, who was killed in April by members of his presidential guard. The legislature in Niger has started debating the amnesty bill which, if passed, will cover those who participated in the April coup as well as all previous coups. Meanwhile a Prime Minister has been appointed for the new civilian government; he is Hama Amadou and has held the post previously. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
