Kosovo: Should the world get involved?

Pressure to stop the bloodshed in Kosovo has led the international community to take direct measures against the Serbians.

Six world powers have reacted to what Serbian Authorities termed an "operation to liquidate the heart of Kosovo terrorism" amongst ethnic Albanians. The Serbian action has lead to dozens of deaths.

Madeleine Albright, the US Secretary of State, says: "The only effective way to stop violence in that region is to act with firmness, unity and speed. Moral condemnation and symbolic gestures of concern alone will get us nowhere."

The international group has agreed to back an arms embargo against Yugoslavia but Russia remains reluctant to back other sanctions.

Ethnic Albanians in Kosovo are calling for help from NATO, the European Union and the United Nations.

President Milosevic says that Yugoslavia is " resolutely opposed to all attempts to internationalise internal problems of another country."
