Malcolm Marshall - Your tributes

BBC News Online users have been emailing in their tributes in memory of cricketer Malcolm Marshall.

Although having seen him in the later Stages of his career, Marshall was a great bowler to watch. It is indeed a great loss for cricket of such a great bowler.
Haider Hasan, England

I saw Malcolm rip right through England and could only admire his brilliance. He will be sorely missed by all true cricket fans.
Kev Bennett, England

Sorry to see the great man go.
Mr Jones,

It is truly sad that such a legend will not get to put back and pass on all that expertise that he accumulated and displayed over the years. To his wife and family are extended my deepest sympathy.
Rudy Headley, Barbados

It's a great loss. May God bless peace to his soul.
ATUL C BEDADE, INDIA

A sad day for cricket as one of the greatest fast bowlers passes away. Marshall was as devastating as Ambrose, Walsh and Bishop put together. He will be sadly missed.
Alex Fisher, England

Sad loss to the game. Always enjoyed him in action. My French wife also agrees (and not many French people understand the game!)
Keith Vendy, UK

This is a big shock for me personally. I have always considered him as the greatest bowler in the world. The great sportsman will be missed by all cricket loving fans in the world. My deepest condolences to his family and his friends.
Magesh Varadharajan, U.S.A

Great loss to the world of cricket I always compare him with Imran Khan. I still can cherish the memories of his bowling
Asif Hashmi, Pakistan

I will never forget the sight of this lion-hearted man batting for West Indies, with one arm broken. A wonderful warm and irrepressible cricketer... a terrible and sad loss to his family and the whole world of cricket.
Mike Obermaier, England

My bowling idol has gone. This is a sad day for the cricket world, Malcolm was a cracking bowler, and a gentleman. Rest in Peace.
Jack Jacobs, Netherlands

As a child I used to imitate the bowling action of Malcolm Marshall. And when I did it in the playground it always worked! He will be missed a lot.
Shahid Hussain, UK

Unfortunately I couldn't get a chance to watch his playing directly but I have great feeling on his pace bowling and Cricket brilliance. There is no way a person can escape from god's call and as he is so young to die is paining our hearts. We may pray for his peace in rest.
Raghavan Ramu, Singapore

Sad to see a great bowler go.
Ratnesh Gautam & David Appleby, UK

Malcolm, It was a pleasure to see you terrify our batsmen (Bourda, Guyana). You were awesome. We'll miss you, may you rest in peace
Henry Valenzuela, venezuela

I feel a part of my youth has gone, I remember the long hot summers, the smooth paced run and fast bowling of the great Malcolm Marshall RIP
Richard Lane, Australia

A sporting great, what a shock.
Andy Threadgold, UK

My blood ran cold when I heard the news. Malcolm had the flair for cricket down to his bones. A great legend, his actions spoke louder than my words. May he rest in peace.
David Browne, West Indies

World has lost a great cricketer. He will be missed by thousands of cricket lovers. Truly a sad day for cricket. May he rest in peace.
Dr D Anandanesan, UK

Undoubtedly, Malcolm Marshall was a one off. His skill on the field will not be matched for many years to come. He was a brave and gentle man in his life off the cricket field and will be deeply missed by those who followed his career and knew him.
Tim Gorst, UK

Malcolm Marshall was a cricketing legend. I will never forget Malcolm in the early 80's destroying England with the ball and then frustrating the English bowlers by batting one handed due to fractured sustained to his left hand. He will be truly missed but his achievements will never be forgotten.
Rajen Patel, UK

Sadly missed, one of the greatest of all time.
Des Gittens, UK

A truly amazing bowler who was always brilliant, quick and gave 100%. You always knew that he terrified the batsmen. It was thanks to him I started playing cricket and in the sporting world will truly be missed.
Natha Modhwadia, England

It is with much sorrow that we learn of the passing of this great sportsman and ambassador for our country. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the nation of Barbados and the entire Marshall family at home. West Indies cricket has lost an excellent contributor. He was just great!
Mike Griffith, England

Malcolm Marshall dead at 41? How can it be? Certainly puts things in perspective. Let's all go rock & roll.
1) I think he'd appreciate it.
2) Let's all enjoy life while we can.
Joe Ryan, France

As a Hampshire fan for thirty years I would like to say what a privilege it was to watch Malcolm as a school boy and the inspiration he gave me to play cricket. Cricket has suffered a great loss - but thank you Malcolm for the many happy memories.
Mark Fuller, UK

'Awesome' - the only words to describe such a great player
Gavin Curtis, UK

My sympathy goes out to the family of a great fast bowler, who was a star of the unbeatable West Indies side of the 70s and 80s. From a fellow Bajan.
Rodney Lee, England

Malcolm certainly was one of the "greats"!!!! He was a delight to watch him bowl. He had the ability to scare any batsman in the world in the nicest possible way. May his soul rest in peace (Amen).
Naveed Aziz, Scotland/Pakistan

The greatest bowler I have ever seen in my life. God be with his family.
Ben, India

I am in tears. I saw you play in the 70s in England and always followed your wonderful career although here we don't get to see much cricket. Thanks for the memories, Malcolm.
Soo Ying Chow, Malaysia

Malcolm was one of my childhood heroes in cricket. Being an England supporter he used to scare the hell out of me when he came into bowl. I would hate to think what the English batters used to think!! He will be sorely missed all over the world.
Neil Reader, England

My memory of Malcolm Marshall was his tight bowling never giving the batsman time to settled in, and a master tactician. It's a sad day for all cricket fans around the world.
Malcolm Doran, England

Malcolm Marshall was once described as the 'Rolls Royce' of pace bowlers. He will be sadly missed.
Krishna Sompura, England

It is an immensely sad day for world cricket. Malcolm Marshall was a fine man and a cricketer of ferocious passion and commitment. His untimely passing will affect all of those who love cricket around the world.
Gretta Hawkes, New Zealand

I was really shocked to learn the sudden demise of Malcolm. He is all time great bowler I ever admire. I offer my deepest sympathy to his family.
Ishan Junus, Qatar

A genuine fast bowler who is so exciting to watch.
Alex Wong, Malaysia

This was a great shock when I heard the news this morning. As a cricket fan, Malcolm Marshall was for me the all time great fast bowler. A true competitor and a great joy to watch. In fact, he was the one guy we all tried to impersonate at school. My feelings go out for his family and friends. He will be sorely missed by the cricketing world.
Jeremy Rowe, UK

It was a pleasure to watch him play - even when he was causing a batting collapse in a test! All who love cricket will mourn him.
M Gardner, UK

One of our Greatest Caribbean Heroes! Thank you for making us proud.
Chris Athanaze, UK

What a shock! He was one of the cornerstones of the Golden Era of the West Indian team. Even a few months ago, he seemed to be involved in cricket in one form or the other. My respects to one of the greatest the game has seen.
S. Gobinathan, USA

The cricketing world is a sadder place for the loss of Malcolm Marshall - one of the all time greats!
Graeme Newcomb, UK & RSA

One of the greatest fast bowlers. I feel really quite sad My feelings go out for his family, as I have recently lost my Mother through Cancer. I actually come from Hampshire and have lived here in Sweden for 8 years. A sad loss to the Cricket World.
Kurt Knowles, Sweden

An excellent cricket player who will be dearly missed. He was simply the best and will be an ambassador for the cricket world for many years to come. May his soul rest in peace.
Rakesh Vaghela, England

One of the greatest players. Many times have I enjoyed his exploits playing for my home county. To learn of his death at such a young age fills me with great sadness. My condolences to his family.
Kevin Stouse, UK

I was stunned to hear the death of Malcolm Marshall.I remember some time back reading the news of cancer but never thought he would perish to it so suddenly. The sudden death makes it all the more shocking.
Jaisimha, U.K. (Indian)

It is a very sad day for all cricket players and supporters around the world. A bowler who spearheaded possibly the greatest fast bowling quartet ever has left us so prematurely. Malcolm embodied the true professional and played a large part in the West Indies domination of the game for so many years. He set the standard for many of the fast bowlers of his day and many that followed. Even when he was playing in the Sharjah senior tournament Geoff Boycott commented that he was "still good enough to be in the regular West Indian squad". However, cricket supporters can remember fabulous bowling displays, ask Mike "X marks the spot" Gatting. MM - R.I.P
Fabian Saverimuttu, UK

Malcolm Marshall was one of those cricketers you couldn't help admiring...even when he was single-handedly destroying the cream of your country or county's batting. A truly wonderful bowler, a bold and creative batsman and probably the coolest dude ever to set foot on a cricket field. Respect, Malcolm.
Robert Ward, UK

Malcolm was the greatest fast bowler I have ever seen. He remains huge hero in Natal. He will be missed by cricket followers the world over.
Paul Gerrard, South Africa

Malcolm Marshall was one of the greatest bowlers I have ever seen - even if England and Kent were on the wrong end! Two great performances by him stand out for me. The first against England at Lords in the 80's when he bowled from the pavillion end on the second morning with little result. After lunch, he came from the Nursery end and with a shortened run-up went through the English order in very little time and ended up with a 6 wicket haul.
The second was in the B & H final in 1992 when play was carried over to the Sunday. Waiting to take my seat in the stand, I watched him by the sight screen from the Nursery end pitch a beautiful delivery which left Mark Benson with no option to edge to David Gower. The only consolation for me as a Kent supporter came later in the day when Mark Ealham hit Marshall for a six, the only time I can recall such an event!
A true giant in the game, he will be surely missed.
Barry Wilbourn, UK

A hero has gone all too early.
Ryszard Borowy, UK

Malcolm was my first cricketing hero. He gave me his autograph when I was a kid watching Hampshire and always had loads of time for all us young fans. He was an inspirational figure for Hampshire and his love for the county and for English cricket will never be forgotten. My greatest memory of him is seeing him hit a four through the covers whilst batting with a broken arm against England - a brave, brilliant genius.
Alex Liakos, England

He was the bowler you pretended you were as a kid.
Neil Stephens, England

A sad day for world cricket.....but legends never die...
Neil Graham, England

An unbelievable shock in that it was so unexpected - one of "the" great legends of the modern game
Stuart Francis, UK

I offer my sincere condolences on this early and sad demise. I did not know Malcolm personally but loved his cricket. May his soul rest in peace. Amen
Irum Chaudhry, Pakistan

I first saw a cricket match on television in Perth, Western Australia, back in the early 1980s. Coming from a country where cricket is considered a niche game, I initially find the game boring. Then I saw the West Indies team playing a Test Match against Australia. And Malcolm Marshall, plus not forgetting the rest of the gang. Thanks for showing me what cricket is all about.
David Chen, Malaysia

Without doubt, Malcolm Marshall was the greatest fast bowler I have ever seen and cricket is poorer with his passing.
Allister Webb, England

To the fastest little guy I have ever seen...thanks for the entertainment...
David Fabbro, Australia

Malcolm was a genuinely nice man, and a greatest fighter, certainly one of the best fast bowlers I ever seen and probably one of the greatest of all time. It's a great lost for West Indian cricketers even for world cricketers.
K V Kumaran, Sri Lanka

How sad that you were taken so young.
Joanne Vines, England

I am shocked to hear the news, I feel that as if I have lost a friend and someone I have always known. I have rated Malcolm as one of the greatest players cricket can ever produce. I would like to wish him peace & condolence to his family.
Bobby Saggu, England

One of the greatest bowlers of all time. It was always exciting to watch Malcom in action with his lightening speed and cleverness. I am sure he will be missed by all.
Rizwan, UK

An inspiration to young cricketers, especially those wishing to bowl fast. Along with Sir Richard Hadlee, the greatest bowler of his era. Will be missed.
Shane Kelly, New Zealand

I like many others who grew up in Hampshire during the 80's I will never forget watching Malcolm racing in at the county ground, ripping into to opposing batsmen. He always gave his all whatever the opposition, even at the many charity games he appeared at around the county. He was a sporting inspiration to us all. Deepest condolences.
Neil Cresswell, UK

I was always in awe watching this compact frame shuffle in from not very many paces, then generate such incredible pace, trying to emulate him, as I and I am sure so many of my peers throughout the world have tried to do, is the greatest complement that any of us could pay. My condolences to his family.
Stephen R Moore, UK

I was shocked to hear the news. A sad loss to the cricket world. I had the privilege to meet him on several occasions - always had a smile on his face. Deepest sympathies to his family.
Gary Banks, UK

What sad, sad news. I admired Malcolm Marshall so much and my thoughts are now with his family. I think that people round the world similarly saddened should all donate to their local Cancer Research charity.
Jill F Baird, Scotland

I still remember the 1984 tour of WI to India when I was a 14. Today, I can recall every single wicket he took in that series. I find it hard to believe that he's dead. Truly a magnificent sprots man and a great ambassador of Cricket. May his soul rest in peace
Arun Govindaraja, India

Marshall was by far and away the best fast bowler of his generation, eclipsing the considerable talents of team mates and colleagues - more recently, his contribution in a managerial role was starting to pay dividends - the cricketing world has lost a gem
Omar Faruqui, UK

I am really shocked to hear this news. He was one of my favourite fast bowlers. May his soul be in rest. Amen.
Banday,Imtiaz, Pakistan

Well that's the ultimate truth of the life, but at this young age that's shocking. I saw Marshall in 1983 when he came with the mighty West Indies team to India. A great bowler in true sense. Not only the West Indies cricket but the whole cricket loving nations will miss this great fast bowler.
Pinto Gupta, India

As a young cricket fan in the eighties I always hated England playing the West Indies as I knew defeat was always looming. The only redeeming highlight of the summer was watching the World's greatest fast bowler in action, Malcolm Marshall. Even though I only play a low level of cricket, as a boy watching players like Malcolm it inspired me to play cricket and enjoy it and that is what the game is all about. Thank You Malcolm for many great sporting moments, pity they were always against my own country.
Ian Pitman, England

One of the greatest ever fast bowlers. Malcolm - you'll be sadly missed my friend. Respect from Warwickshire.
Ian Piper, England

A very decent man who will be sorely missed.
Tony Hodges, UK

To a truly great bowler and gentleman. Your displays of cricketing brilliance will be remembered always. You will be sadly missed.
Igor Fijan, Australia

A great West Indian all rounder. A bowler I looked up to when I was a kid. Will be missed greatly.
Anoop Ubhey, United Kingdom

A great bowler and a good man. He will be missed
Ian Mackrell, UK

Malcolm Marshall was probably one of the best cricketers I have ever seen.
Colin Parry, England

Malcolm Marshall was the most exciting cricketer I ever saw play. His ability with the ball is unsurpassed; his batting ferocious and his underarm whip in from the boundary was legendary amongst us down at long leg at Southampton and Bournemouth. We thank God that we can say we saw him play.
Andrew Milner, England

Malcolm was a great cricketer and a fine ambassador for the sport. He will be remembered with deep affection by all who love the game of Cricket.
Dr. Brian Wardle, England

As a Hampshire supporter I always loved watching Malcolm. He was always so dedicated to the team, and I cannot recall how many times he pulled off amazing match winning feats with both bat and ball - he was truly a marvellous professional and a lovely man, who gave pleasure to many people. He will be very sadly and deeply missed.
Alison Pitman, England

He was an excellent sportsman and gentleman and will be sadly missed by the cricketing world.
Melissa McGinley, England

Very sad news. I remember watching Malcolm for both the West Indies and Hampshire. He was always a joy to watch due to his talent, inventiveness and obvious love of the game. He had the wit and guile of a leg spinner but bowled at 90 mph. I have also seen him coaching where he inspired confidence and belief in his charges. The world of cricket is a poorer place this morning. My condolences go to his family and friends.
Richard Snell, England

Malcolm was truly a great of greats. We will surely miss him however, the memories that we have of him will always remain. As a fan of his I wish to offer my sincere condolences to all Malcolm's family. We have been truly blessed.
Donovan Grant, England, UK

It is terribly sad to hear of the death at such a young age of one of the great fast bowlers of this age or any other. I have watched a lot of cricket overt the years but funnily enough only saw Malcolm bowl once "live" at the Edgbaston test 1991. He was coming to the end of his career then but was still a wonderful bowler. Very few of the great "quicks" have been small or average height men, but it didn't stop Malcolm being lethally fast as Harold Larwood, another short man, had been in a different generation. This is a very sad day for cricket.
Michael Slade, UK

He was right there amongst the greatest. I cannot remember any other pace bowler who could single-handedly demolish vaunted batting line-ups on the docile Indian pitches. And he was a competent batsman too, perhaps more than he is given credit for. (Refer Calcutta test, 1983). May he rest in peace.
Arup Dastidar, UK & India

My deepest sympathies.
Sarath Dharmadasa, Sri Lanka

In a country where cricket isn't popular, Malcolm made it popular. I'm sure lots agree with me when I say that part of my youth is gone with Malcolm. May he have a peaceful eternity.
Conor Patterson, Ireland

Malcolm Marshall was a true ambassador of the Cricket Game, you will be dearly missed. I will never forget the Test series in the 80's in West Indies when you struck fear in all the English batsmen.
Mukesh Halai, England

May your soul rest in Peace Malcolm. May your family have peace, understanding and wisdom in this difficult time. God Bless you and your family. Amen.
Juliet Onyeka, United Kingdom

You are the best bowler that I have ever seen. You will be missed by the thousands who you knew, and the millions who knew you, through this great sport, cricket.
Chris , NL (English)

For all Malcolm Marshall gave to cricket as a player, a coach and a commentator, he will be sorely missed. His ability to move the ball both ways at extreme pace would make him an outstanding bowler at any time in the history of the game, or indeed at any time in the future.
Andy, UK

Thank-you for so much pleasure you bought to so many
Kelsang Lodro, UK

Probably the fastest, yet accurate bowler of our era, he was the epitome of west Indian pace attack and could tear the opposition batting to shreds on his day. His death is a loss not only to West Indian but to world cricket as well for this gentleman will never be born again. May his soul rest in peace.
C. Ranjit, India

Malcom was my favourite sporting hero. I will be missing him a lot. My condolences to his family
D. Mukundan, India

Simply The Best!
Ben Arnold, England
